CHEMICAL IN GREENS PUTS STOP TO CANCER


British scientists have discovered why a diet high in green vegetables helps to stave off cancer.

Chemicals released when vegetables such as cabbage or Brussels sprouts are chopped, processed, cooked, chewed and digested make cancer cells mortal, stopping them from proliferating indefinitely. The protection is provided by the chemical that gives the vegetables their slightly bitter taste.
The anti-cancer mechanism is the same as that of some modern cancer drugs, according to Ian Johnson, head of the team at the Institute of food Research responsible for the discovery.
The study, published in Carcinogenesis , shows that sinigrin, a chemical compound found in brassicas the family of vegetables that includes broccoli, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts which is converted by processing or eating into allylisothiocyanate (AITC).
They found according to Professor Johnson in laboratory experiments that AITC interrupts the division of colon cancer cells. They hope to show how important diet can be in your personal anti-cancer Armoury.
Instead of going on dividing indefinely, the cells float free and then go into apoptosis the process of cell suicide.
Normal cells commit suicide at the end of their life cycles. But when this process goes wrong and cells continue dividing unchecked, the result is a tumour.
One of the targets of drug scientists is to devise ways of restoring Normal behaviour, and it appears that AITC can do this.
That the diet high in fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of cancer has been known from studies that show eating plenty of greens can halve the risk.
But exactly how it worked has, until now, been unclear.
Although this is not a. miracle cancer cure, it does show that preventive dietary measures can be discovered and exploited in the same way as Drugs, Johnson said.
We have known for many years, that sinigrin-breakdown products kill cancer sells. "But by uncovering a previously unknown part of the process working in a similar way to some anti-cancer drugs, we hope to show how important
diet can be in your personal anti-cancer armoury."
The shorter the cooking time and the less water used to prepare the vegetables, the greater the preventive effect, he said. He recommended two to three helpings of brassicas a week to get the benefit.
He added that the findings would help to give details on how much of certain vegetables should be eaten, and might also be used in future to develop vegetables high in cancer prevention factors

According to Dr Michael Elstein in his excellent book "Eternal Health", the known fact about cancer in most cases it is preventable, however it is up to each and everyone of us as no one but ourselves can do it.
At least eighty per cent of cancer are the result of bad living habits, the rest could be many environmental factors such as asbestosis.
It is constant bad living habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and bad diet that includes toxic chemicals.
Although most cancers usually take time to develop and become evident, if caught in time with a complete change in lifestyle it is believed that their are clinics around the world that have been able to put many cancers into remission by rebuilding the immune system.
This would consist of a diet rich in the required nutrients to restore the body with a chance to enjoy life to the full without radiation and the need for chemotherapy with all the dreaded side effects.
Cancer need not be a death sentence but a warning that your body has been treated adversely. You have had a warning, it is now up to you to do something about it.
There has been many examples of cancer being put into remission to allow the patient to enjoy a long active life without the dreaded disease.
There would not be a greater example than Dr Ian Gawler, A Veterinary Surgeon who was told he had cancer more than thirty years ago. He was told by his doctors after he had one leg amputated, he had at best five years to live. It was then that Dr Gawler decided it was not for him and went about the task of doing something himself to alleviate the problem by diet, complete dedication and determination. He now lives a normal life without the terrible death sentence haunting him.
His advise to others in conquering cancer is a change in diet, to stop smoking, learn to meditate to relax and develop the power of positive thinking. Over the years we have had eminent doctors who have defied the establishment and come forward with a dietary and nutritional program for their patients, and in making it public, have been expelled from the group, we can only hope that is all in the past.
Dr Cornelis Morman first began work on his revolutionary diet for cancer as far back as the 1930s.
After observing the eating habits of pidgins suffering cancer Dr Moerman developed a nutrition-based program for his patients.
It was a program that effectively brought positive results. Slowly it became known of his success in treating cancer and it spread. Other physicians throughout the Netherlands approved of his diet as a recognised treatment against cancer.
Dr Moermans theory is based on one elementary idea that the body's natural defences are far more sophisticated than anything a laboratory could produce. Instead of concentrating treatment on just the cancer he wanted to enhance the body's immune system so that the body could heal itself. Dr Cornelis died of natural causes in 1988 aged 95.
There has been so many other doctors that have successfully treated patients and have turned on the controlling body in favour of nutritional medicine.
